Photographer No.2- David Hockney

I have chosen David Hockney as one of my photographers  as i like his approach to multiple imagery which is similar to the photo joiner technique which i am familiar with. This photographs that he has created capture one subject or landscape however they have been re arranged either to make a photo joiner or a multiple imagery grid. This creates a sense of distortion which i feel is unique and effective compared to other photographers.  I really do like his technique because although it is showing one subject, it can be broken down in to smaller section which are shown through the different squares in the grid or photo joiner. 

This image created by David Hockney uses a multiple imagery grid to divide its contents into smaller section and a photo joiner technique in order to bring the photograph together to created a multiple imagery piece. The audience can see an old man sitting in a chair and because he is  alone and not really doing anything, this allows the audience to interpret the photograph as they look at it. The use of the tilling effect is a alternative editing technique to use to take a Multiple Imagery grid and make it look unique to other photographer work. The photo joiner techniques can also be seen in this photograph as each square does not match together perfectly. The colours within the image again, remain quite neutral and the image is intriguing due to the slight colour that has been added to the image in small sections which allows them to stand out slightly from the rest. 

 This second photograph created by David Hockney is a photo joiner piece of a  small town containing building, roads, cars and trees. This photo joiner has been created by by taking detailed close up of all the different element within tis town. Then they have been placed back to together to create one image. The fact that the smaller images do not match up perfectly shows that this is a photo joiner as this something which is part of this technique. In the centre of the image is the road which appear to become narrower, the further away that it becomes. This allows the audience to interpret where the may lead and whether thats where it ends. Lastly it is clear that neural colours have been used so that the images does not look too busy therefore effecting the overall photograph.

This third photograph by David Hockney is a photo joiner of  a portrait of an old woman. This has been created by taking various photograph at different angles and perspectives of the woman so that when it is put back together the audience are able to see 180 degrees shot of the women rather than just the front of her face which can be seen in a normal portrait. Also by using this technique the audience are able to see different facial features in more detail as each small section shows a different element of her face which the audience can then choose individual section in which they would like to look at. 

This last photograph by David Hockney shows a Multiple Imagery piece which also has elements of photo joiner involved which is similar to the first photograph which can be seen above. The images have been taken and placed back together i a form of sequence of one person swimming in a pool, however  they do not perfectly match together to what the original image must have looked like. This is where the element of a  photo joiner can be seen. These images have been taken of one person but  from different perspectives and angles therefore when the images are placed together and show an abstract scene of the water. This image shows a person that is swimming through the pool and they can be seen at lots of different points throughout the image which makes the image look distorted as the same person can be seen in loads of different places. 

I was influenced by this photographers work as i would to apply his technique to my own work. However i may begin by doing photo joiner and multiple imagery grid separately and then if i like the outcome, i will think about combining them together like David Hockney does. Also i would take on board the use of neutral colours as it is obvious from David Hockney's work that this is important because otherwise the photograph will begin took look too busy which will effect the main focus of the photograph.

Overall i really like David Hockney's approach to multiple imagery and is definitely something  which i would like to look at applying to my own work. I like how he is able to bring together various different shot which then resemble one subject or place. However i also like how he created a sense of distortion in his photographs by each section not matching up perfectly which gave the photograph the photo joiner look. 

Personal Shoot No.6 Work Diary

 During this shoot i went to North Weald Redoubt which is a old, abandoned building which is full of graffiti which is the reason that i went there as i thought that it would be something different to look at other than photographing people. However also during this shoot, i also came across many things which had become rusted therefore i decided to take close ups of them in order to create a multiple imagery grid.

This is one of my photographs from this shoot, This wasn't something which i initially went to North Weald Redoubt to photograph however when i saw all the different rusted item, i thought that different close up would look good if they was put together in a multiple imagery piece. When editing each individual photograph, i adjusted the brightness and contrast in  order to emphasis the rust as this was where the majority of the detail was and was the main focus in each shot. 

This is another one of my photographs from this shoot. I created this photograph by taking various photographs of the interior of the building and then when editing it i layered  them all om top of each other and changed the opacity so that they where all visible. I Then decided to change it to black and white however i still wanted some of the graffiti to be in colour as this was the main element of the interior of the building. Therefore i used the technique selective colour in order to create a contrast between the brightly colored graffiti and the old, abandoned building.

I was inspired to do this shoot from my first shoot which i did looked at overlaying building and main/well known tourist attraction  and i was really pleased with how they came out. I also wanted to look at doing some more multiple imagery grid however i wanted to experiment with the different shoots in which i included.

As a result of this shoot, i would like to look at more graffiti therefore i am going to go to Shorditch to focus on overlays with just graffiti and included bright colours which is something which i haven't looked at before.

Personal Shoot No.5 Work Record

During this shoot, i wanted to show to lifecycle of a rose by taking photographs as i remove one petal at  a time.I decided to use a bright pink rose and a black background as i felt that this created a good contract and it allowed each petal to stand out as the feel of the flower.

This is my final animation from this shoot. I began by taking various shots of the flower however each time i would have removed one of the petals so that when i put them together in an animation i would look as if they flower is gradually dying which would be symbolised by the petal gradually falling off the flower. By using a black background, i was able to make sure that there was no difference between each shot as i have learnt from previous animation that the background has to be the same in each shot otherwise the animation does not look consistent. Lastly to ensure that the flower didn't move to much, i  stuck it do the vase which it was in to order to ensure that it was in the same position. 

If i was to do this shoot again, i could maybe make the animation slower in order to represent the flower gradually dying over time which will be more realistic than how i have done it. Also i could do it close up to show less of the background as i realised after that this much background is not necessarily needed. 

I was inspired to do this shoot because in my previous shoot i looked at movement therefore i though that i would take this further by looking at the movement of a flower as it gradually lost it petal.

As a result of this shoot i feel that i would like to go back and look at overlays as this was something which i began with however i haven't expanded on. 

Discussion

For my unit 4 portfolio i have decided to do the exam question 'Multiple images'. This is because this is something which will be the most interesting are for me as i have already briefly looked a different techniques such as animation, multiple imagery and overlay which i will be able to incorporate into the project. During this project, i am going to look at existing photographs in order to see different approaches and techniques to the question which i will then take on board and in some cases recreate. I feel that this question will allow me to be open minded with all my shoots as there is no specific subject in which the photographs have to show therefore i will be able to develop from each shoot as well as being inspired by other work. Also with this question i would like to look at photographing both on location and in the studio as this was something which i was not really able to do in my last unit as it was mainly studio based.
